Protect your skin from free radicals

Oxidative stress – the no. 1 skin-ageing factor

These days, our skin is subject to a wide range of influences which favour the development of oxidative stress. UV radiation, pollution, stress, unhealthy diets (industrially processed fats, sugar, food additives), cigarette smoke and medicines are only some of them. The consequences are accelerated skin-ageing and a pale, tired-looking complexion.

How does oxidative stress develop?

Oxidative stress is formed from free radicals. Free radicals are molecules containing oxygen that are unstable (incomplete) because an electron is missing from their chemical structure (see figure, left part).

To make themselves complete, they snatch the electron they need from the next best intact molecule (e.g. molecules from the cell membrane of the skin or proteins). The previously intact molecule then becomes a free radical itself as it now lacks an electron (see figure).

This leads to a chain reaction which can lead to an excess of free radicals and visible consequences for the skin – if the body's own protective system does not have enough antioxidants.

How do antioxidants work?

Antioxidants can neutralise free radicals by providing the free radical with an additional electron without becoming unstable themselves (see figure).

The free radicals are thus neutralised and no longer attack other body cells. Antioxidants act as free radical scavengers as it were and so protect the skin's cells.

In the area of skincare, antioxidants are put to specific use. Many plants contain natural substances with an antioxidant effect which act against skin-ageing.

Antioxidant polyphenols

IIn the Santaverde age protect range, we use the antioxidant nectar of the aloe vera blossom. The proven polyphenol content effectively prevents skin-ageing due to oxidative stress.

Antioxidant carotenoids

Our XINGU age perfect product range also has a particularly high concentration of antioxidant active ingredients. The antioxidant performance of XINGU age perfect is proved and measured using the ORAC method (oxygen radical absorbance capacity).

The ORAC value stands for the total antioxidant capacity of a substance, measuring both the extent and the period of time in which an organic substance neutralises free radicals.
